 WHAT IS WORLD PRESS FREEDOM DAY

Every year May 3 is observed as "World Press Freedom Day". The day is marked by UN General Assembly in December 1993 based on the recommendations of UNESCO's General Conference. The day signifies the importance of "Right to freedom of expression" and hence the relevance of press freedom in the country.

THEME

The theme for World Press Freedom Day 2023 is ‘Shaping a Future of Rights: Freedom of expression as a driver for all other human rights’. This theme focuses on the critical role of freedom of expression in promoting and protecting other human rights.

SIGNIFICANCE OF PRESS FREEDOM DAY

1. It’s a day to evaluate press freedom around the world and to defend the media from attacks on their independence.

2. On this day we also pay tribute to journalists who have lost their lives on duty. 

3. Press freedom has a crucial role to play in promoting democracy and development. We all must protect the right to freedom of expression, a fundamental human right enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. 

4. We also analyse the threats to journalists and media workers who report on issues of public interest. It is also an occasion to recognise the contributions of media professionals who work tirelessly to keep the public informed and hold those in power accountable.

5. Freedom to press enables individuals to express their opinions, seek and receive information, participate in public life, and hold those in power accountable. 

However, press freedom is under threat in many parts of the world. Journalists and media workers have been facing harassment,arrests, life threats and even violence for doing their job. This not only violates their human rights but also undermines the ability of the media to perform its vital role in society.

Therefore, on this day we acknowledge the crucial role of journalists in our country and we must enable them in every manner to perform their job in the most transparent, efficient and fear free manner. This shall enable public in taking informed decisions while electing their leader or head of the country. 

Hence, only by supporting a free and independent press can we ensure that our societies are informed, engaged, and democratic.

विश्व प्रेस स्वतंत्रता दिवस 2023 की थीम 'शेपिंग ए फ्यूचर ऑफ राइट्स: फ्रीडम ऑफ एक्सप्रेशन फॉर ड्राइवर फॉर अदर ऑल ह्यूमन राइट्स' है। यह विषय अन्य मानवाधिकारों को बढ़ावा देने और उनकी रक्षा करने में अभिव्यक्ति की स्वतंत्रता की महत्वपूर्ण भूमिका पर केंद्रित है।

प्रेस स्वतंत्रता दिवस का महत्व

1. यह दुनिया भर में प्रेस की स्वतंत्रता का मूल्यांकन करने और मीडिया की स्वतंत्रता पर हमलों से बचाव करने का दिन है।

2. इस दिन हम ड्यूटी के दौरान जान गंवाने वाले पत्रकारों को भी श्रद्धांजलि देते हैं.

3. लोकतंत्र और विकास को बढ़ावा देने में प्रेस की स्वतंत्रता की महत्वपूर्ण भूमिका है। हम सभी को अभिव्यक्ति की स्वतंत्रता के अधिकार की रक्षा करनी चाहिए, जो मानव अधिकारों की सार्वभौमिक घोषणा में निहित एक मौलिक मानव अधिकार है।

4. हम जनहित के मुद्दों पर रिपोर्टिंग करने वाले पत्रकारों और मीडिया कर्मियों को होने वाले खतरों का भी विश्लेषण करते हैं। यह उन मीडिया पेशेवरों के योगदान को पहचानने का भी अवसर है जो जनता को सूचित रखने और सत्ता में बैठे लोगों को जवाबदेह बनाने के लिए अथक प्रयास करते हैं।

5. प्रेस की स्वतंत्रता व्यक्तियों को अपनी राय व्यक्त करने, सूचना मांगने और प्राप्त करने, सार्वजनिक जीवन में भाग लेने और सत्ता में बैठे लोगों को जवाबदेह ठहराने में सक्षम बनाती है।

हालाँकि, दुनिया के कई हिस्सों में प्रेस की स्वतंत्रता खतरे में है। पत्रकारों और मीडिया कर्मियों को अपना काम करने के लिए उत्पीड़न, गिरफ्तारी, जान से मारने की धमकी और यहां तक ​​कि हिंसा का भी सामना करना पड़ रहा है। यह न केवल उनके मानवाधिकारों का उल्लंघन करता है बल्कि मीडिया की समाज में अपनी महत्वपूर्ण भूमिका निभाने की क्षमता को भी कमजोर करता है।

इसलिए, इस दिन हम अपने देश में पत्रकारों की महत्वपूर्ण भूमिका को स्वीकार करते हैं और हमें उन्हें सबसे पारदर्शी, कुशल और भयमुक्त तरीके से अपना काम करने के लिए हर तरह से सक्षम बनाना चाहिए। इससे जनता अपने नेता या देश के प्रमुख का चुनाव करते समय सूचित निर्णय लेने में सक्षम होगी।

इसलिए, केवल एक स्वतंत्र और स्वतंत्र प्रेस का समर्थन करके ही हम यह सुनिश्चित कर सकते हैं कि हमारे समाज सूचित, व्यस्त और लोकतांत्रिक हों।
